Construction of Nord Stream and South Stream pipelines will begin this year

Published on Friday 12th February 2010

Construction of Russian gas company Gazproms Nord Stream and South Stream pipelines will begin this year.

The news that the natural gas pipelines that run from Russia and the European Union will go ahead was announced by key partners in the two projects.

Gazprom is planning to begin construction of the South Stream pipeline in December, once approval from Turkey has been granted in November.

The South Stream pipeline will transport gas via the Black Sea and Bulgaria to Austria and Italy.

Construction of the Nord Stream pipeline, which runs beneath the Baltic Sea to Germany, will commence in April even though Finlands approval for the project was delayed.

This week Gazprom also revealed that it could invest in Ukraines gas pipeline system if it was invited to do so, Reuters reported.

Deputy chief executive Alexander Medvedev said any investment would not replace the need for Gazprom to develop the South Stream pipeline.ADNFCR2586ID19609858ADNFCR
