Vector appointed to manage New Zealands gas supply security

Published on Wednesday 27th January 2010

Utility company Vector has been appointed as the lead agency in managing events that impact New Zealands natural gas supply from high pressure transmission pipelines.

As part of a new compulsory code introduced as part of the Gas Governance Regulations, Vector has been appointed to the Gas Industry Company (GIC) to carry out the role of the Critical Contingency Operator (CCO).

This means that in the event of a national gas supply emergency, the company would have the power to instruct pipeline operators in the actions they should take.

"Depending on the severity of the event, pipeline users may be directed to instruct their customers to reduce or cut consumption of natural gas. This will be done following formal industry curtailment notifications which will outline the order in which the curtailments must occur," Vector chief executive Simon Mackenzie said.

Gas emergencies or supply constraints can result from a physical failure or damage to a high pressure natural gas pipeline or when demand exceeds the supply of gas.

Vector delivers natural gas to local distribution pipeline systems supplying all the major population centres in the North Island of New Zealand via its 2,286km long gas transmission system.

The infrastructure group also operates and carries out routine surveillance and permitting on the Maui pipeline.ADNFCR2586ID19577691ADNFCR
