Nord Stream awards pipe construction contract

Published on Friday 29th January 2010

German firm Europipe, Russias OMK and Japanese company Sumitomo have been commissioned to supply one million tonnes of steel pipes for the construction of the second pipe of the Nord Stream project.

The value of the contract is approximately €1 billion (£0.87 billion). Europipe was awarded 65 per cent of the contract, OMK 25 per cent and Sumitomo ten per cent.

Following bids from the German, Japanese and Russian companies, a decision was made by the Shareholders Committee regarding the tender award.

The tender for the second 1,220 km gas pipeline running between Vyborg in Russia and Lubmin in Germany was independent of the first lines tender in 2007.

Henning Kothe, project director at Nord Stream, said: "We are happy to have Europipe and OMK, the suppliers of the first pipeline, as well as Sumitomo, a newcomer to our project, on board. Sumitomo has a solid track record in offshore projects."

Delivery of the pipes for the second pipeline is scheduled to begin in May this year, with construction of the first line of the pipeline scheduled to start in April.

The Nord Stream pipeline project will link Russia and the European Union via the Baltic Sea, being used to transport natural gas to businesses and households. ADNFCR2586ID19580320ADNFCR
