Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has inaugurated a new natural gas pipeline from Turkmenistan to Iran.
The new pipeline will be the second to be opened between the two countries and will more than double annual natural gas exports from Turkmenistan to Iran to 20 billion cubic metres.
A ceremony in the desert near the Iranian border was held to launch the 30 km pipeline. Turkmen president Kurbanguly Berdymukhamedov also attended the event to open the link, which will see gas delivered from the Dovletabad field to the Khangiran refinery in Iran.
"This pipeline will be a good stimulus for energy cooperation between Turkmenistan and Iran, as well as for delivery of Turkmen gas to the Persian Gulf and the world market," Mr Ahmadinejad said at the ceremony.
The new pipeline will help Turkmenistan to offset losses from lower sales to Russia as a result of Moscow cutting imports from 50 billion cubic metres to 30 billion cubic metres a year.
Last month another pipeline was launched that would ship 40 billion cubic metres of gas per year from Turkmenistan to China.
