Construction of Nord Stream project expected to begin on schedule

Published on Saturday 23rd January 2010

The oil and gas unit of chemicals group BASF has announced that the construction of the Nord Stream pipeline project is expected to begin on schedule.

Chief executive of Wintershall Rainer Seele said that he hoped that by the first half of this year financing for the first two tubes would be completed, Reuters reported.

"I expect that the last permit for the Baltic pipeline will come in time for the planned start of construction in April to materialise," he said.

Russian natural gas will be transported by the Nord Stream pipeline under the Baltic Sea to Germany.

Currently the monopoly responsible for the project is made up of Russian energy company Gazprom, BASF and Dutch company Gasunie, with discussions currently taking place regarding the inclusion of GDF Suez.

This week it was also revealed that Ukrainian presidential candidate and regions party leader Viktor Yanukovych is planning to initiate talks regarding the participation of the Ukraine in the Nord Stream pipeline construction consortium.ADNFCR2586ID19572476ADNFCR
