The Mackenzie gas pipeline project, which is proposed to be built through the Northwest territories of Canada, has gained conditionally recommended approval from a Canadian panel assessing its socioeconomic and environmental impact.
It has taken two years of deliberation for the joint review panel to make the decision, which will impact the conclusion made by Canadas federal regulator the National Energy Board over whether the $16.2 billion (£9.7 billion) project will go ahead.
The report from the panel said that the pipeline will "provide the foundation for a sustainable northern future".
"If built and operated with full implementation of the panels recommendations, would deliver valuable and lasting overall benefits, and avoid significant adverse environmental impacts," the panel explained in a press release.
In April, hearings will begin from the National Energy Board, which will consider the review panels recommendations.
The Mackenzie natural gas project is a proposed 1220 km pipeline system along the Mackenzie Valley of Canadas Northwest Territories to connect northern onshore gas fields with North American markets.
