The Canadian Standards Association (CSA) is urging energy companies in Canada to take on a new set of standards.
CSA is hoping that the adoption of the security management standards will protect onshore gas and oil pipelines from vandalism.
The standards, which were developed alongside the National Energy Board, help pipeline owners and operators to recognise dangers and then avoid them by modifying their systems.
Suzanne Kiraly, CSAs president of standards, told reporters about the benefits the new rules will give pipeline operators.
"It gives organisations a consistent approach to the items that they should be considering, whether its information technology security or worker security," she said.
The suggested standards come following gas line bombings on EnCana Corps pipeline in British Columbia.
