TransCanada has announced that it is to increase tolls on Albertas natural gas producers, which may impact on oil and gas recruitment in the region.
However, according to the Globe and Mail, the pipeline charges will be less than previously expected.
It has agreed to raise the fees to $1.6381 per gigajoule of gas that passes through its pipeline an increase of 45 cents that has yet to be approved by the National Energy Board.
Explaining the decision, Russ Girling, TransCanadas chief operating officer, said supply of gas has declined, whereas demand has risen, leaving less of the resource to export.
He added that the dip in exportable gas was sharper than the firm had anticipated.
"That, in combination with the declining volumes has resulted in a fairly sharp increase in our 2010 tolls," Mr Girling remarked.
TransCanada currently operated a network of over 59,000 kilometres of pipelines. It also provides gas storage and has a total capacity of 370 billion cubic feet of capacity.
