GDF Suez is close to signing a deal to confirm its involvement in the Nord Stream Project.
The French energy company is said to be nearing the culmination of talks with Russian gas giant Gazprom.
It is thought that the firm will take a nine per cent stake in the scheme, which will see some 55 billion cubic metres of gas each year from Russia to Germany.
The contract is expected to be finalised by the end of this year or at the beginning of 2010, GDF Suez chief Gerard Mestrallet said recently.
A source cited by Reuters commented: "We are on the verge of signing a contract but it will not be tomorrow."
Meanwhile, it was recently asserted that the Nord Stream Project pipeline would supply as much as four per cent of the UKs gas by 2012.
In an interview with the Times, chief executive of the consortium Matthias Warnig said Britain had already signed up to receive four billion cubic metres of gas annually.
