Sweden agrees to Nord Stream Project

Published on Saturday 7th November 2009

Sweden has given its assent to the construction of the Nord Stream Project in its waters.

Following several years of opposition, the nation this week gave its approval to the pipeline that will transport gas from Russia to Germany via the Baltic Sea.

The proposed Swedish section of the conduit will stretch for 506 kilometres and will help to pump 55 billion cubic metres of gas when it is completed in 2012.

Although Nord Stream was requested to assess alternative routes for the pipeline, Sweden said all states have a right to put pipes in international water and on coastal states continental shelf, which somewhat limited its scope for action.

However, the firm withdrew its application for a maintenance platform near the Gotland island.

"The government has made tough demands to secure that the sensitive environment in the Baltic Sea isn’t jeopardised," said Swedish environment minister Andreas Carlgen.

Denmark also gave its consent to the conduit being laid in its waters after evaluating its environmental concerns.
