Shell to re-route pipeline: Onshore vacancies may arise

Published on Friday 6th November 2009

Irelands planning board has requested that Shell reroute one of its gas pipelines, which may result in further onshore vacancies.

The firm plans to construct the conduit that will carry the substance from its Corrib fields off the west coast of Ireland to a processing plant.

Originally, the line was to run close to the village of Rossport. However, local concerns have prompted the call for the move.

Shell is to conduct an environmental impact assessment for an alternative route that would see the pipeline placed in the Sruwaddacon bay further away from the town, following an An Bord Pleanala report that suggested the channel should be moved further away from the public.

The company also said it would halve the pressure of the onshore gas pipeline.

Commenting, a spokesperson for the firm said the new route is "challenging but achievable".

"The pipeline as designed is safe and meets all industry standards," the representative added.

Meanwhile, oil and gas recruitment opportunities may present themselves in the Czech Republic, which recently expressed interest in acquiring a stake in the Transalpine pipeline, which is owned by a consortium of eight companies, including Shell, among others.
