Turkey is expected to approve the South Stream Baltic pipeline project envisaged by Gazprom.
An agreement between the Turkish and Russian leaders that will allow the channel to pass through the formers Black Sea territory is to be signed in Ankara, Pipelines International reports.
Plans see some 900 kilometres of pipeline running from Russia under the Black Sea to Bulgaria.
Two branches will split from the line, with one transporting gas through Bulgaria and Greece to Italy and another reaching Austria through Serbia and Hungary.
Earlier this week, Gazprom management committee chair Alexei Miller said Turkey was one of several countries attracted to the development.
"We see a large interest being displayed by countries that are not yet participating in the project," he commented.
The news comes as Gazprom and Eni, the majority shareholders in the South Stream project, have been in talks with Electricite de France SA over the possibility of the latter firm becoming involved.
