Putin: South Stream may be completed ahead of Nord Stream Project

Published on Monday 26th October 2009

The South Stream pipeline may be completed before the Nord Stream Project.

This is according to Vladimir Putin, Russian prime minister, who made the comment this week.

He said "positive movement" from the Turkish government over work on the scheme means the construction may be completed ahead of schedule in 2013.

The South Stream natural gas pipeline will transport the substance to the Balkans and other European countries, and is expected to cost some €25 billion (£22.5 billion) and pump 31 billion cubic metres of central Asian and Russian gas, eventually increasing to 63 billion cubic metres.

Mr Putin commented: "The project has every chance of being completed before the Baltic project Nord Stream," according to reports.

Meanwhile, the Nord Stream Project will see a conduit run from Vyborg in Russia to Greifswald on the German coast.

GDF Suez is expected to join the initiative by the end of the year, according to Reuters.

The firms vicechair JeanFrancois Cirelli spoke of the potential deal recently at the World Gas Conference.
