Oil and gas recruitment: Austria, Slovakia in pipeline deal

Published on Tuesday 20th October 2009

Austria and Slovakia have been in talks over the construction of a new oil pipeline, in oil and gas recruitment news.

Federal ministers of the respective countries Reinhol Mitterlehner and Lubomir signed a memorandum of understanding last week, that will see a crude line built between Bratislava and Schewat.

The channel to be constructed in a joint initiative between OMV and Slovakian Transpetrol is expected to be 60 kilometres in length and will have a capacity of 2.5 to five million tonnes of oil every year.

The conduit will be connected to the Russian pipeline network, which will see crude imported straight from Russia to the Schewat refinery.

Commenting on the initiative, Gerhard Roiss, OMV deputy chief executive officer and executive board member, said: "The construction of this crude oil pipeline will enable for the first time the delivery of crude oil to Austria directly from Russia."

Mr Roiss added the move will be important as it will significantly reduce Austrias dependence on other transport methods.

In related news, Russia and China have been in talks recently over a potential deal that will see the latter become Russias largest natural gas consumer.
