Nord Stream Project munitions clearance banned

Published on Wednesday 14th October 2009

The clearance of munitions ahead of the laying of the Nord Stream Project pipeline in Finnish waters has been temporarily banned.

A court in Finland made the ruling last week as a result of an attempt to block the scheme by Erkki Sederqvist, the claimant who hopes to establish a mining claim in the area, according to reports.

Mr Sederqvist mounted the mining claim recently, only to have it rejected by Finlands Economy Ministry last month.

However, he has decided to appeal, leading to a court investigation during which time Gazprom, the company leading the Nord Stream Project, is unable to dispose of the World War II naval mines.

Sebastian Sass, permitting manager for Nord Stream, said this will not affect the clearance since the venture does not need to work in the 50metre strip affected by Mr Sederqvists mining claim.

Nord Stream announced recently that it would begin removing unexploded weapons in Finnish and Swedish waters to create a security corridor for its 1,200kilometre pipeline running from Russia to Germany via the Baltic Sea.
