Nord Stream Project announces clearance of pipeline route

Published on Thursday 8th October 2009

The Nord Stream Project is preparing to clear one of its pipeline courses of munitions, it has emerged.

According to the firm, it is to dispose of unexploded ordinance in the security corridor of its Finnish and Swedish routes.

Work is expected to commence in the fourth quarter of the year, following the discovery of 27 unexploded items in Finnish waters and one in Swedish seas.

Nord Stream stated it uses a dynamically positioned vessel for the installation of the pipeline and an anchored lay barge –procedures that require detailed risk assessments.

In a statement it said: "Munitions in the anchor corridor … will be avoided during construction by suitable anchor patterns and control of the anchor wires catenary."

However, if a pattern cannot be devised that permits the safe installation of the pipeline, more clearance will be necessary.

A security corridor of 25 metres of either side of the pipeline is required, it added.

Meanwhile, Dong Energy announced recently that it was to receive double the amount of natural gas via the Nord Stream Project pipeline.
