Oil and gas recruitment: New system boosts North Sea transport safety

A new system has been launched to improve flight safety for those hired through oil and gas recruitment for North Sea projects.

NATS and Oil and Gas UK have announced that North Sea Multilateration will expand the reach of landbased radar to include offshore flights, which could improve safety for contractors.

This will enable a control tower at Aberdeen Airport to see these helicopters and to track and respond to these accordingly, those looking at oil and gas recruitment in the region may be interested to discover.

John Mayhew, general manager for Aberdeen at NATS, claims that 25,000 helicopter flights are dealt with by this facility each year.

He says: "The new system enables controllers to see the flights theyre controlling all the way to and from the platforms, so it will be easier to ensure that they maintain the correct track and height."

Mr Mayhew adds that in the case of an emergency, helicopters will be able to be tracked and located a lot quicker through the new system.
