Nord Stream project fishery agreements signed

Published on Friday 18th September 2009

Agreements with fishery associations in Germany, Finland, Sweden and Denmark have been made to compensate them for disruption caused by the construction of the Nord Stream pipeline.

A package including mitigation measures has been agreed on, while a compensation deal has also been signed with the Russian Federal Fishing Agency.

As part of the Nord Stream pipelines assessments, it found that construction would have local impacts of minor significance.

The compensation deals have been designed to reimburse these communities for the disruption that building the pipeline will create, as well as any changes to fishing techniques it will require them to adopt in future.

Among the concessions the Nord Stream pipeline project has introduced are a new form of trawl boards, which minimise the environmental damage these create and are designed to improve catches and fuel consumption.

Last month, logistical activity for the Nord Stream project commenced with the transshipping of 168 steel pipe joints.ADNFCR2586ID19365423ADNFCR
