Published on Monday 10th August 2009

A major manufacturer has shipped a total of 200,000 tonnes of large diameter pipes for the Nord Stream project since May 2008, it has announced.

Vyksa Steel Works has delivered the materials as part of the first stage of construction, Steel Guru reports.

The pipes have a diameter of 1219mm and wall thicknesses of 30.9mm, 34.6mm or 41mm and are certificated and quality controlled by the operators of the Nord Stream project, as well as independent experts.

Made of highstrength steel of grade H70, the items contain a threelayer external coating and a smooth flow coat internal coating.

The Nord Steam project will extend for 1,220 km and run between Greifswald and Vyborg, with a first stage carrying capacity of 27.5 billion cubic metres a year.

According to its owners, the development will receive all five required national permits by early next year.

Andris Piebalgs, European Union energy commissioner, claims that the Nord Stream project has the full support of the European Commission, who describe progress on construction as a crucial step towards political region’s energy independence.ADNFCR2586ID19304086ADNFCR
