Workers at the Ormen Lange field have successfully completed the world’s deepest hot tap operations, which could interest those looking at oil and gas recruitment. StatoilHydro, an integrated technologybased international energy firm, reports that it completed the work at the Norwegian Sea site in early August. The operation was conducted 860 metres below sea level, connecting a subsea template to existing seabed infrastructure. Bjorn Kare Viken, vice president for marine technology and operations at StatoilHydro, claims that the operation resulted in significant cost savings.
He states: "Remotely operated hot tapping utilises much of the same technology as the manual procedure using divers." Mr Viken says the technology has been tailored to the pressure and conditions unique to these environments, which could interest engineers looking at oil and gas recruitment. The entire Ormen Lange gas development is subsea, with all installations at a depth of between 800 and 1,100 metres.
Production operator Shell has hired StatoilHydro to perform the operations on its behalf.
