Logistical activity at the Nord Stream project has begun with the transshipping of 168 steel pipe joints. The delivery has been made from Mukran in Germany to an interim stockyard in Karlskrona and is the first load of an expected 13,000 of these joints by the end of the year. Henning Kothe, Nord Stream project director, claims this shows that the initiative is on target. He says: "With todays start of the transhipment of the pipes, the logistical preparation of the Nord Stream project is on track." Mukrans weightcoating yard, which is being managed by EUPEC PipeCoatings France SA, is also storing, handling and transporting the steel pipe joints. The provision of these pipes is required at this stage as a third of these need to be coated and available when the beginning of the first lines construction commences in 2010. Last month, Nord Stream project managing director Matthias Warnig and the European Unions (EU) energy commissioner, Andris Piebalgs, confirmed the importance of the scheme to the EUs energy security.
